Cistern Maintenance 101: Keeping rain water crystal clean & free of mosquito larvae

Cistern care is vital in Antigua. A few practical lessons learned over 15 years:

1. Gutter Guards: Clean leaf debris from roof gutters before the rainy season.
2. First-Flush Diverters: Diverts the first 20 gallons of roof runoff containing dust/bird droppings so only clean water enters.
3. Disinfection: Unscented chlorine bleach (approx 2 oz per 1,000 gallons) kills bacteria without tasting like pool water.
4. Larvae prevention: Ensure overflow pipes have fine brass wire mesh so mosquitoes can never enter.
5. Triple-stage sediment filter + UV lamp before house taps.

Great guide Jim! Also put a couple of small guppy fish in older open cisternsβ€”they devour 100% of mosquito larvae within 24 hours.
